On behalf of our longtime pro bono partner Family Equality Council (FEC), a BCLP team has filed an amicus brief in the Third Circuit in support of the city of Philadelphia, which suspended referrals of children to Catholic Social Services in Philadelphia because that agency refused to certify same-sex couples seeking to become foster parents, in violation of Philadelphia’s non-discrimination law.

This brief follows our successful “voices” type presentation, which focuses on the stories of impacted children and families, rather than legal jargon. Similar briefs garnered attention and helped spotlight important family equality efforts across the US, including the fight for marriage equality and for the right of same-sex married couples to both be named on their children’s birth certificates. Elizabeth Goldberg, New York, headed our team on this brief, which also included Bill Hibsher, Phil Karmel, Laith Hamdan and Mike Olsen. The effort is being coordinated by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).
