Former Executive Vice Chancellor and GC at Washington University Enhances Higher Education Team at Bryan Cave

February 14, 2017

The international law firm Bryan Cave LLP today announced that Michael R. Cannon has affiliated with the firm as of counsel in the St. Louis office.

Prior to affiliating with the firm, Cannon served as the executive vice chancellor and general counsel of Washington University in St. Louis for the past 23 years. His higher education experience along with a deep understanding of in-house legal and business objectives within higher education institutions will help the firm strengthen its Higher Education practice. The expanded Higher Education Team arises from the firm’s heightened focus on the increasingly complex challenges confronting colleges and universities today.

Bryan Cave’s Higher Education Team possesses the experience, breadth and insight to solve the myriad challenges facing universities and colleges. Recognizing that now, more than ever, universities and colleges find themselves under strenuous attack in the courts and from regulatory agencies across the broad spectrum of legal domains in which they operate, Bryan Cave’s Higher Education Team offers a multidisciplinary approach. The Team offers services in: higher education internal investigations and compliance; university technology development, IP protection and commercialization; higher education governance, tax and business affairs; campus expansion/renovation, finance and development; academic health care regulation and transactions; and university and college athletics regulation and contracting.

Cannon received his A.B. in economics from Washington University, a B. Litt. in politics from Oxford University as a Rhodes scholar, and his J.D. from Yale Law School.

He will continue to serve as a professor of practice along with other duties, at Washington University, where he teaches an undergraduate course on legal conflict in the United States. Prior to his university tenure, Cannon was a commercial litigation partner at a Washington, D.C. law firm and a federal prosecutor of government corruption cases.
