Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner has long represented world-renowned artist Christo (and prior to her passing, Christo’s wife and artistic partner, Jeanne-Claude). A number of firm attorneys worked on a recent Christo project realized in Italy titled The Floating Piers. The project included 100,000 square meters of yellow fabric carried by a modular floating dock system that created a walkway for visitors across Italy’s Lake Iseo and into nearby towns.
Christo and the successful realization of The Floating Piers project is the subject of new documentary, “Walking on Water,” set for May 24-30 at the Music Box Theatre in Chicago. Wider distribution is scheduled for the US and abroad.
Led by Chicago Senior Counsel Scott Hodes, a team from BCLP worked on The Floating Piers since its inception. Chicago Partner Nicola Fiordalisi and Attorney Mario Polito (both fluent in Italian) set up the corporate entity for Christo to do business in Italy. The firm also was involved in negotiating employment contracts, procurement of the materials and event insurance policies. Chicago Partner Mark Paskar handled the IP aspects of the project, including ensuring copyright protections for the project. New York and DC Partner John Barrie and New York Counsel Karin Barkhorn advised on tax and estate planning issues.
