St. Louis Partner Charlie Weiss was featured March 1 in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch for his push to have the state Legislature consider a new statute that would make it illegal to charge defendants for their time spent in jail. Currently, many counties in Missouri charge defendants about $50 a day for each day they are jailed. A former president of the Missouri Bar Association, Weiss last year was one of a small group of lawyers who helped write Ten Guidelines on Court Costs and Fees for the American Bar Association, a report which aims to move the criminal justice system away from a revenue maker in some areas of the country.
