Three BCLP Attorneys Recognized by ‘Missouri Lawyers Weekly’ as Lawyers of the Year for Wrongful Conviction Work

December 7, 2020

BCLP St. Louis Partner Charlie Weiss, Counsel Steve Snodgrass and Associate Jonathan Potts are named Missouri Lawyers of the Year for their wrongful conviction work, as named by Missouri Lawyers Weekly

The BCLP team recently won a complete exoneration of pro bono client Donald “Doc” Nash, who was wrongfully convicted of capital murder in 2009. The BCLP team toiled for eight years, through multiple rounds of habeas corpus proceedings, to disprove the state’s junk science and establish Nash’s innocence. The state dismissed all charges with prejudice on Oct. 9.

Weiss, a fellow in the American College of Trial Lawyers and the International Academy of Trial Lawyers, has more than 40 years’ experience in business and complex litigation, representing numerous Fortune 500 companies and other clients in significant litigation matters. He also has more than 35 years’ experience in government contract matters. Weiss has headed a number of pro bono teams for BCLP. The Nash case was the fourth innocence case in the past 11 years in which BCLP lawyers in St. Louis succeeded in obtaining habeas corpus relief for pro bono clients who were innocent but had been wrongly convicted. Weiss was involved in all four cases, Snodgrass worked on three of those cases, and Potts was a key part of the team on two of those cases.

Snodgrass has represented government contractors in audits and civil and criminal investigations; represented protestors and interveners in bid protests of federal, state and local government procurements; advised government contractors on compliance with the FAR and executive orders applicable to government contracts; and advised regarding novation and other government contracting requirements applicable in mergers and acquisitions in which a party to the transaction is a government contractor. He also has extensive experience representing banks, telecommunications manufacturers and government contractors in complex commercial litigation.

Potts is a business litigator with extensive experience in the areas of commercial litigation, class action defense, and sports litigation. He represents clients in high-stakes class action lawsuits and strategic appeals in state and federal courts across the country. Potts defends businesses faced with bet-the-company litigation, complex consumer lawsuits, and shareholder derivative actions. Potts also represents and advises leading sports organizations in the constantly evolving space of head injury/concussion litigation.  His clients span all industries and sizes, including Fortune 500 companies, financial institutions, professional sports teams, and privately held companies.

The Missouri Lawyers Weekly awards ceremony is scheduled for Feb. 11, 2021.
