May 7, 2019

Chicago Of Counsel Maria Vathis, national president of the Federal Bar Association (FBA), served as the keynote speaker at the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois’ 20th Annual Awards for Excellence in Pro Bono and Public Interest Service.

The May 1 event honored Chicago-area attorneys for their commitment to pro bono and public interest work before the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois.  The Chicago Daily Law Bulletin on May 2 featured Vathis and her keynote address. Vathis discussed the many benefits of pro bono and public interest work for the community at large, for the legal profession, and for lawyers themselves. Her message was that no act of kindness is too small.

Vathis has been an active member of the FBA since the beginning of her legal career.  She was president of the Chicago Chapter in 2011 and served on the national board of directors and on numerous committees over the years.  Vathis is only the 10th female national president of the organization in almost 100 years as well as one of the youngest.  Vathis is a frequent speaker at FBA events throughout the United States and in Europe.

At Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner, Vathis has a broad range of experience defending corporate clients in complex business litigation matters and class actions involving alleged violations of federal statutes.  Vathis represent clients in the United States and in Europe.  She is a frequent guest on television and radio to discuss the FBA’s mission.
