Ian is a Corporate Partner with over 20 years’ experience of living and working in London, Moscow and Hong Kong.

He has significant expertise in international M&A, joint ventures, private equity and venture capital across a range of sectors and jurisdictions, with a particular focus on cross-border transactions and high-growth/emerging markets.

Ian has been with the firm since 1998; he is the former Head of Corporate for Asia (2015-2018), former Head of English Law in Russia (2009-2015) and former Head of the Private Equity Group (2007-2009).

Ian is a Fluent Russian speaker, and reads, writes and speaks Chinese Mandarin to HSK Level 3.

  • Acting for major US corporation on portfolio disposal of European leasing and infrastructure assets to private equity consortium.
  • Acting for UK and European private equity funds and VC houses on a range of buy-outs, investments/follow-ons and disposals across different sectors and jurisdictions.
  • Acting for major UK banking group on the restructuring and disposal of large hotels portfolio.
  • Acting for US-listed tech-retailer in relation to global expansion programme including local set-ups, joint ventures and acquisitions and various corporate/commercial matters in HK/China and Russia.
  • Acting for US corporate clients in relation to commercial transactions and activities in China and South East Asia.
  • Acting for tech start-ups in Singapore and Myanmar.
  • Acting for major Japanese trading house in relation to commercial and regulatory matters.
  • Acting for Hong Kong construction company on joint venture in India.
  • Acting for listed Hong Kong group on acquisition of telecoms & infrastructure assets in Russia and Eastern Europe.
  • Acting for both Russian and international companies and banks on major transactions in Russia in sectors including energy and power, mining, infrastructure, transportation, telecoms, finance, insurance, real estate/logistics, healthcare, education, hotels, hospitality and retail.
  • Acting for large Chinese bank on cross-border disposal of commercial shipping assets.

Ian regularly lectures on legal topics and has presented at conferences and seminars all over the world on his specialist subjects, including at events organised by International Bar Association (IBA), Japan Institute for Overseas Investment (JOI), Law Society of England and Wales,  Law Society of Hong Kong, Kazakhstan Bar Association, Moscow State Institute of International Relations University (MGIMO), Russian State Duma Company Law Subcommittee, Skolkovo Innovation Centre.
