Ian is a Corporate Partner with many years of experience living and working in London, Moscow and Hong Kong. He is co-leader of the firm’s Private Equity initiative and leads the firm’s Private Equity EMEA team.
He has significant expertise in international M&A, private equity and venture capital across a range of business sectors and jurisdictions, with a particular focus on cross-border transactions and high-growth/emerging markets.
Ian has been with the firm since 1998. His previous leadership roles with the firm include as Head of Corporate for Asia (2015-2018) and Head of English Law in Russia (2009-2015). Ian is a fluent Russian speaker, and reads, writes and speaks Chinese Mandarin to HSK Level 3.
Ian has been recognised as an expert by a number of leading legal directories and surveys, including Legal 500 and Chambers. Ian is co-author of the following books: “English Law On China’s Belt and Road – And The Competitive Challenge from Chinese Law As An Alternative” (2016), “A Case Study Guide to M&A Transactions in Russia” (2013) and “Use Of English Law In Russian Transactions - A Comparative Review” (Alpina Publishers 2011).

Ian regularly lectures on legal topics and has presented at conferences and seminars all over the world on his specialist subjects, including at events organised by International Bar Association (IBA), Japan Institute for Overseas Investment (JOI), Law Society of England and Wales, Law Society of Hong Kong, Kazakhstan Bar Association, Moscow State Institute of International Relations University (MGIMO), Russian State Duma Company Law Subcommittee, Skolkovo Innovation Centre.
