James Shafter is a member of the Transactions and Technology, Entrepreneurial and Commercial Practice Client Service Groups. Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Shafter was in private practice in Decatur, Illinois for 30 years with one of the oldest firms in downstate Illinois where his practice concentrated in commercial and anti-trust litigation, general corporate matters, banking and governmental affairs.
Prior to joining Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner, Mr. Shafter served as General Counsel of COFCO International Ltd., a multi-flag global agribusiness based in Geneva, Switzerland. Before working at COFCO, Mr. Shafter served as Vice-President and Assistant General Counsel for Archer-Daniels-Midland Company for 5 years, effectively serving as the executive assistant to the Chairman and CEO. He worked closely with the board of directors, and was responsible for corporate governance issues, governmental affairs and major litigation including all anti-trust cases.
Mr. Shafter also served as Vice-President, Mergers & Acquisitions at ADM for 5 years. He was responsible for Global M&A and worked with the four division presidents on a daily basis on M&A activities, as well as business strategy and execution.
Mr. Shafter is a frequent lecturer and panel participant in various programs on Mergers & Acquisitions.
