Matthew is experienced in a broad range of real estate matters with a particular emphasis on investment work for institutions, pension funds, property companies, private equity and overseas investors.

Particular emphasis on investment sales, acquisitions asset management and development for clients such as Hermes, Great Portland Estates, Ares, Nan Fung, KWAP, J Safra Sarasin and Norges.

Matthew is Co-chair of BCLP’s London Healthcare practice which has advised on some of the largest UK investment transactions in recent times including Belgian REIT, Aedefica’s, £450m acquisition of a national portfolio of care homes and the sale of Retirement Village Group to AXA and HC One.

BCLP was awarded 2018 legal advisors of the year (transactional) by HealthInvestor.


Representative Experience

  • Great Portland Estates – Hanover Square advising on the complex development of GPE’s Hanover Square estate above the Bond Street Crossrail eastern ticket hall. Matthew has advised on this project for 8 years including on the development arrangements with TfL and Crossrail, on the joint venture with Hong Kong Monetary Authority and on significant pre-lets to KKR and Glencore.
  • Nan Fung on the corporate acquisition of the Regent Quarter estate in Kings Cross for approximately £300m.
  • Ares on its £36m acquisition and subsequent disposal of a logistics hub in Harlow.
  • J Safra Sarasin on the £74.5m acquisition and financing of 95 Queen Victoria Street in the City of London.
  • Vestas Investment Management on its debut UK deal forward purchasing a new logistics unit, let to Amazon in Bardon, Leicestershire.
  • Ventas on a corporate sale and leaseback transaction of Canford Healthcare’s freehold elderly care home portfolio comprising five care homes in Sussex and Kent for a total consideration of £57m, and on its £55m acquisition of 5 care homes in the London region from Churchgate Estates..
  • Aedifica on the acquisition of a portfolio of 93 healthcare properties in the UK for approx. £450m.
  • Retirement Villages Group advising management on the  sale of Retirement Villages Group, the UK’s largest retirement village operator with 14 active communities and a pipeline of developments to AXA and HC One.
  • Frogmore advising on its joint venture and funding of high end dementia care facilities with Innovative Aged Care.
  • Auriens advising on the development and financing of its high end luxury retirement living facility in Chelsea.
  • Hermes Real Estate on the creation of a £800m joint venture between BT Pension Scheme and Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB) focusing on central London real estate opportunities.
  • CBRE GI on its £220m acquisition and financing of 10 Gresham Street, London for its client, KWAP, a Malaysian Pension Fund. The purchase involved the acquisition of units in a Jersey Property Unit Trust and was completed within 12 working days of HOTs being agreed.
  • CBRE GI on behalf of an Asian investor on its disposal of Thames Court in London to a private individual.
