Valdetero Authors Article in ‘Bloomberg Insight’ on CCPA Predictions and Data Breaches

June 20, 2019

Chicago Partner Jena Valdetero authored an article published June 18 by Bloomberg Insight discussing how the new California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) might impact companies in the case of a data breach when the new law takes effect in 2020. Of particular note with the CCPA, California will become the first state to provide for statutory damages as a result of a date breach, regardless of whether California residents suffered any actual harm. Valdetero also outlines mitigation tips to avoid heavy costs associated with litigation. “If you are reaching for a bottle of Xanax right now, rest assured it’s not hopeless,” she writes. “Businesses can do a lot to mitigate their exposure before a breach occurs.”
