Igniting Investment Opportunities on the Journey to Net Zero

The decarbonisation of transport and its associated infrastructure is driving us toward a sustainable, net zero future.

We fuse deep sector expertise with legal and regulatory advice to generate investment opportunities for our clients in the e-mobility economy.

Take the first step today.

Accelerating Change - In Numbers

  • New petrol and diesel cars are to be phased out in the UK by 2035.
  • Reaching net zero emissions by 2050 could cost tens of billions of pounds each year and around 1–2% of national wealth.
  • There will be 84 million electric vehicles (EVs) on European roads by 2030.
  • There are 12 million passenger EVs, one million commercial EVs, and over 260 million electric two and three wheelers on the road globally.
  • Electric car registrations increased in major markets in 2020 despite the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • 18 of the 20 largest OEMs have committed to increase the offer and sales of EVs.

Putting EV Opportunities in Motion

BCLP’s EV sector expertise is truly unique. Drawing on our depth of industry experience, our integrated, global team adds value across the full spectrum of the e-mobility lifecycle, from mine to wheel.

Navigating Complexity

EV batteries are typically composed of lithium-ion and lithium polymer, but lead-acid, nickel-cadmium, nickel-metal hydride, zinc-air and sodium nickel chloride are also used. Our mining team helps clients navigate the complexities associated with developing mining projects to extract these battery metals, helping a number with their ESG policies designed to mitigate the associated environmental impacts. We assist clients at every stage of the process, from initial exploration through to mine development, financing and production, and sales to end-offtaker(s).

Taking Charge

Once electric vehicles are on the road, the ability to recharge on the move is crucial. The construction of charging points and associated infrastructure is an area of particular strength for BCLP. Our lawyers in the UK, US and Europe have unparalleled, market-leading experience advising manufacturers of batteries, hybrid systems for vehicles and charging points across the globe. Of note, we advised  UK charge point operator, Osprey Charging on their first-ever open-access charging hub and on the UK’s largest rollout of EV charging infrastructure within supermarket car parks.

Empowering Progress

The shift away from personal modes of transportation has seen Mobility as a Service (MaaS) accelerate. This allows consumers to plan, book and pay for multiple types of mobility services through joint digital channels. At BCLP, we utilise our experience of advising major vehicle rental companies, car and e-bike sharing platforms, and taxi and bus companies to supercharge our clients’ growth.

Delivering Success

The growing importance of last mile delivery decarbonisation has seen an increase in the use of e-bikes and EVs for the transportation of consumer goods. BCLP helps clients in this space seize opportunities and deliver products as quickly, sustainably and efficiently as possible. Our lawyers are currently advising on a ground-breaking sustainable parcel delivery system in the UK which promises to revolutionize the way goods are transported and reduce emissions by removing a significant number of HGVs from the roads.

Driving Change

BCLP is an active member of the zero emissions vehices (ZEV) and electro mobility sector, proudly sponsoring World EV Day and the EV Summit 2021, and has many clients and contacts engaged within and adjacent to this rapidly emerging market, including our work in the real estate and logistics sectors.
