Putting EV Opportunities in Motion
BCLP’s EV sector expertise is truly unique. Drawing on our depth of industry experience, our integrated, global team adds value across the full spectrum of the e-mobility lifecycle, from mine to wheel.
EV batteries are typically composed of lithium-ion and lithium polymer, but lead-acid, nickel-cadmium, nickel-metal hydride, zinc-air and sodium nickel chloride are also used. Our mining team helps clients navigate the complexities associated with developing mining projects to extract these battery metals, helping a number with their ESG policies designed to mitigate the associated environmental impacts. We assist clients at every stage of the process, from initial exploration through to mine development, financing and production, and sales to end-offtaker(s).
Once electric vehicles are on the road, the ability to recharge on the move is crucial. The construction of charging points and associated infrastructure is an area of particular strength for BCLP. Our lawyers in the UK, US and Europe have unparalleled, market-leading experience advising manufacturers of batteries, hybrid systems for vehicles and charging points across the globe. Of note, we advised UK charge point operator, Osprey Charging on their first-ever open-access charging hub and on the UK’s largest rollout of EV charging infrastructure within supermarket car parks.
The shift away from personal modes of transportation has seen Mobility as a Service (MaaS) accelerate. This allows consumers to plan, book and pay for multiple types of mobility services through joint digital channels. At BCLP, we utilise our experience of advising major vehicle rental companies, car and e-bike sharing platforms, and taxi and bus companies to supercharge our clients’ growth.
The growing importance of last mile delivery decarbonisation has seen an increase in the use of e-bikes and EVs for the transportation of consumer goods. BCLP helps clients in this space seize opportunities and deliver products as quickly, sustainably and efficiently as possible. Our lawyers are currently advising on a ground-breaking sustainable parcel delivery system in the UK which promises to revolutionize the way goods are transported and reduce emissions by removing a significant number of HGVs from the roads.
BCLP is an active member of the zero emissions vehices (ZEV) and electro mobility sector, proudly sponsoring World EV Day and the EV Summit 2021, and has many clients and contacts engaged within and adjacent to this rapidly emerging market, including our work in the real estate and logistics sectors.
