Our Environment

We recognise the critical importance of addressing climate change, not only on a global scale, but also in the way we operate as an organisation and support our clients. This makes environmental sustainability a core focus of our responsible business strategy.

We are committed to minimising our environmental impact through:

  • Measuring our carbon footprint, setting targets, and regularly updating our emissions reduction plan, which is overseen by our Responsible Business Advisory & Action Board.
  • Providing legal services that support climate-related initiatives, including clean energy transactions, low-carbon infrastructure projects, and green real estate.
  • Collaborating with colleagues, clients, suppliers, and business partners to reduce collective environmental impact.

Our UK LLP, covering our offices in Australia, Belgium, the UAE, and the UK, has near and long-term carbon reduction targets independently validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). Our other EMEA offices have informal targets which are aligned to these ambitions (but from a 2024 base year). In FY24, we expanded our reporting to include Scope 1 and 2 emissions for the US, strengthening our global baseline.

Our UK LLP targets are:

  • Overall Net-Zero Target: Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner LLP commits to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across the value chain by 2050.
  • Near-Term Targets: Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner LLP commits to reduce absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions 55% by 2033 from a 2023 base year. Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner LLP also commits to reduce absolute scope 3 GHG emissions from purchased goods and services, capital goods, business travel and employee commuting 33% within the same timeframe.
  • Long-Term Targets: Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner LLP commits to reduce absolute scope 1, 2 and 3 GHG emissions 90% by 2050 from a 2023 base year.

Wherever possible, we quantify emissions using activity-based data, and we apply published emissions factors from recognised sources. Our methodology prioritises completeness, accuracy, and transparency, with independent verification. We work closely with an external carbon consultant to support data integrity and on-going strategic reviews. Progress to ensure continued impact, is overseen by our Responsible Business Team and Advisory & Action Board.

Our actions to date have driven significant reductions in our emissions. Further details are available in our latest Responsible Business report.

We have a carbon reduction plan, which outlines the steps we need to take as a firm to meet our targets. Current priority actions include improving data quality, advancing our sustainable procurement approach, and enhancing responsible business travel and events practices.
