History

Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner was formed in 2018, but the history of our founding firms dates back more than 140 years. From our roots in St. Louis, Missouri, and London, England, our firm has built a global heritage that encompasses many milestones along the way.

Timeline

  • 1873
    U.S. firm that would become Bryan Cave was founded as King, Phillips & Stewart in St. Louis, Mo., in a building across the street from the current St. Louis office.
  • 1911
    Merger results in Stewart, Bryan, Christie & Williams. In 1916, P. Taylor Bryan's name becomes first in the firm title, where it remains to this day.
  • 1917
    Rhodes Cave joins the firm, which then becomes Bryan, Williams & Cave.
  • 1932
    UK firm Paisner & Co, founded by Leslie Paisner, provides general legal advice including conveyancing. In the 1940s and 1950s the firm develops a reputation for corporate work, clients include Great Universal Stores, Forte Holdings and Penguin Books.
  • 1939
    Firm takes on as client in the U.S. a "poor Scotsman with just a little 'bitty' aviation company" and has served it since its founding. That little company was McDonnell Aircraft Company, now The Boeing Company.
  • 1947
    UK firm Leighton & Co, established by Lionel Leighton, provides litigation and property advice to property developers in the West End of London.
  • 1970
    Berwin Leighton is formed from a merger of Leighton & Co and Berwin & Co. The new firm begins life in Adelaide house, London Bridge and is soon established as a leading property firm whose clients include Tesco, British Land, Ove Arup and Lex.
  • 1973
    As it begins its second 100 years, Bryan Cave has become a strong regional law firm with 52 lawyers in St. Louis. Creation of Executive Committee and Managing Partner position revolutionizes how firm handles its "law business".            
  • 1978
    First office outside St. Louis is opened in Washington, D.C., to enhance growing legislative practice. Offices in Los Angeles and New York follow.                              
  • 1987
    Expansion to the west and southwest. Firm opens offices in Phoenix and Kansas City.
  • 1993
    Firm chosen to represent the government of Kuwait in the preparation, submission and prosecution of its claims of more than $100 billion against the state of Iraq arising out of the invasion and occupation of Kuwait.
  • 1994
    U.S. branch of the firm establishes its Asia presence in Hong Kong and Shanghai, while the UK branch of the firm opens its first international office in Brussels, which provides advice on all aspects of EU and international competition law and regulatory and single market issues.
  • 1996
    Firm lawyers represent client in multiple $100+ million mergers and acquisitions.
  • 1998
    Client Bob Costas emcees Bryan Cave's 125 year anniversary celebration in nationwide simulcast.
  • 2001
    Berwin Leighton Paisner is formed comprising of more than 900 staff including 122 partners. The firm becomes a top 15 City practice in London with 122 partners, 430 fee earners and a turnover of £88m. The merger enhanced the firm’s profile as a leader in the UK property market. In the U.S., the Chicago office opens.
  • 2002
    Bryan Cave and New York-based Robinson Silverman Pearce Aronsohn & Berman merge, substantially enhancing the firm’s presence in New York.
  • 2004
    Firm establishes office in southern Illinois to assist clients with class action, product liability and commercial litigation matters in Madison and St. Clair Counties in Illinois.
  • 2007
    Berwin Leighton Paisner expansion accelerates opening its first office in Asia, in Singapore, followed by Hong Kong in 2011 and Beijing in 2013. The focus is on real estate, asset finance, corporate and dispute resolution and private wealth. Bryan Cave expands in Europe with the opening of a Hamburg office.
  • 2008
    Bryan Cave opens offices in San Francisco and Paris.
  • 2009
    Berwin Leighton Paisner was joined by a team of 70 lawyers in Moscow under the leadership of Andrey Goltsblat to form a full service, multi-award winning office under the name Goltsblat BLP.

    Bryan Cave and Atlanta-based Powell Goldstein merge, creating new offices in Atlanta, Charlotte and Dallas.        
  • 2012
    Bryan Cave and Denver-based Holme Roberts & Owen (HRO) merge, adding new offices in Denver, Boulder and Colorado Springs.  Bryan Cave opens an office in Frankfurt, its second location in Germany.
  • 2014
    Bryan Cave establishes office in Miami.
  • 2018
    Bryan Cave combines with London-based Berwin Leighton Paisner to form Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner, expanding the firm's global reach and breadth of services.
