BCLP Advises Carrefour on franchise agreement with Hypercity Retail in Nigeria
Apr 24, 2026BCLP has Advised Multinational Retail Group Carrefour on its Long‑term Franchise Agreement with Hypercity Retail in Nigeria.
Under the agreement, Hypercity Retail will convert its existing stores to the Carrefour brand and expand its network with more than 75 new stores over the next four years. BCLP also advised on the associated arrangements, under which Carrefour will supply its private‑label products to the franchised stores.
Carrefour’s entry into Nigeria represents a significant development for the country’s modern retail sector and aligns with Carrefour’s 2030 Plan, which targets operations in 60 countries globally, including 22 across Africa by 2030. This marks the third Carrefour franchise transaction in Africa that BCLP has advised on this year, following the signing of new franchise partnerships in Ethiopia and Ghana.
The matter was led by Jinal Shah (UK Managing Partner, Corporate Transactions) and Richard Shaw (Partner, Technology, Commercial and Data), with support from Krish Raichura (Associate, Technology, Commercial and Data) and Edward Boswell (Trainee Solicitor, Technology, Commercial and Data).
