BCLP Partner Amy de La Lama, chair of BCLP’s Global Data Privacy & Security Team, was quoted June 9 by Global Data Review on the proposed American Data Privacy and Protection Act that revealed what a bipartisan, comprehensive national data privacy law could look like in the US. Democrat Senator and Senate Commerce Committee Chair Maria Cantwell has publicly expressed skepticism over the draft law and is reportedly poised to share a revised version of an earlier consumer privacy bill. When faced with a growing patchwork of state-level data privacy laws, companies may intensify the pressure for a federal law. “It’s possible it won’t happen, we still have 50 different data breach laws,” Amy said. “But the more these [state data privacy] laws come online and all differ from each other, the more there will be pressure from industry and others to deal with this at the federal level.”
