Colorado Partner Amy de La Lama, chair of BCLP’s global Data Privacy & Cybersecurity Team, was quoted Feb. 17 by SC Media on the move by domain resolver Quad9 to Zurich, Switzerland, in order to subject itself to stricter privacy laws. The move will place the company under a European Union-like privacy regime that also applies to all global users of a Swiss-based service, not just those in the region. Although she was not addressing this specific move, de La Lama recommended that companies not make this type of significant change without careful deliberation. “Privacy laws at a location are certainly something that companies should factor in, but I wouldn’t normally advise companies to make a decision solely based on” those standards, whether they be stricter to inspire customer trust or more lenient to allow some degree of flexibility. “You’re still often going to be subject to other privacy rules,” she said.
