BCLP Counsel Goli Mahdavi was interviewed May 12 by Yahoo Finance on US state legislation surrounding developments in the AI landscape after the European Union made progress towards legislation to regulate AI tools, including a ban on facial recognition in public spaces. “We are absolutely at an inflection point,” Goli said. “We are seeing now consumers jumping to use generative AI tools like ChatGPT." She added, "Legislators are feeling a real push, feeling pressure to put laws in place to protect consumers." Regarding US states that have enacted laws regulating AI tools, Goli said that under certain laws, “businesses will need to perform impact assessments, in other words, they need to look at the benefits that the use of automated decision making tools provide to the organization and to consumers, as well as the potential risks in using these tools.”
