BCLP Partner Jean-Claude (JC) André, co-chair of the firm’s Appellate & Supreme Court Group, co-authored Federal Appeals: Jurisdiction & Practice (Thomson Reuters 2023 ed.), which contains a solid framework for an introduction to appellate law, followed by a detailed explication of the intricacies and nuances of jurisdiction and practice in the federal appellate courts.

Topics covered include: the philosophy of appeals, what is appealable, the scope and standards of review, extraordinary writs, appellate motion practice, making the most of briefs and oral argument, and more.  The treatise is co-authored by Sarah Erickson André of the UCLA School of Law.

JC has personally briefed or argued hundreds of distinct appeals before the U.S. Supreme Court, various U.S. Circuit Courts of Appeals, the California Supreme Court and the California Court of Appeal, including dozens of briefs and three arguments before the U.S. Supreme Court and over 100 briefs and 45 arguments before the Ninth Circuit. He regularly writes, speaks and teaches about the Supreme Court, Ninth Circuit and California appellate practice, and appellate advocacy generally.
