Partner Jean-Claude (J.C.) André was noted Aug. 17 by Law360 for BCLP’s representation of University of Edinburgh astronomy professor Andy Lawrence, who has filed an amicus brief in a consolidated set of appeals before the D.C. Circuit Court challenging the FCC’s decision to allow Starlink satellites in Earth’s lower orbit. At the center of the appeal is the FCC’s recent order giving SpaceX the go-ahead to bring the rest of its Starlink broadband fleet closer to Earth. Right now there are more than 4,500 active satellites in what Lawrence calls near-Earth orbital space, but within a decade he says there could be 100,000 – bringing with them an increase in light pollution and radio emissions.
