London Managing Partner Segun Osuntokun has been named the 2020 Business Person of the Year at the Black British Business Awards’ (BBBAwards). He was hailed by the BBBAwards for his “unwavering passion for race equity in his 25-year career in business,” with his leadership in the firm’s Race for Change initiative, designed to increase Black representation in the legal profession, particularly highlighted.

Segun has more than 27 years’ litigation and arbitration experience across a range of sectors, including the banking and financial services and energy sectors. Head of BCLP’s Africa Group, many of his cases relate to or originate from jurisdictions in sub-Saharan Africa. Segun is recognized by Chambers and Legal 500 as a “leading individual” for banking litigation and civil fraud, as well as a “foreign expert” on Nigerian disputes.

Segun has long been a champion for diversity and racial equality at the firm and co-leads BCLP’s global inclusion and diversity efforts, a role that took on added urgency following the death of George Floyd earlier this year. Segun has become a visible and vocal role model and advocate for diversity beyond the walls of BCLP, from conceiving of and leading the charge on BCLP’s successful recruitment program, Race for Change, to pioneering the UK Race Fairness Commitment and speaking out in the larger community for racial equity.

This year’s BBBAwards ceremony was a virtual event, held Oct. 30. The news has been widely reported in the UK, including by the Business Leader, Business Mole, City A.M., The Telegraph and the Metro, among others.
