Biography

Kolten C. Ellis is an associate in the firm’s Business and Commercial Disputes Practice Group. He represents clients in a broad range of civil and complex commercial litigation, as well as disputes concerning creditor’s rights. Kolten also maintains an active appeals practice in both state and federal courts.

Prior to entering litigation practice, Kolten served as a law clerk to the Honorable Allen C. Winsor on the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Florida and to the Honorable Robert J. Luck on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit. He regularly draws on his clerking experience in federal litigation that rasies thorny jurisdictional or procedural issues. His experience includes obtaining vacatur of a default judgment against his client and subsequent dismissal for lack of personal jurisdiction.

Kolten earned his J.D. magna cum laude from the Washington University School of Law, where he  served as an executive editor of the Washington University Law Review. During his 1L summer, Kolten served as a judicial extern to the Honorable Raymond W. Gruender of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit He also spent a semester providing pro bono services as a student attorney in the Washington University Appellate Clinic, where his team filed a petition for a writ of certiorari in the Supreme Court of the United States as part of a criminal appeal.

Kolten completed his undergraduate studies maga cum laude in philosophy and economics at Rollins College and holds a master’s degree, with distinction, in philosophy of religion and ethics from the University of Birmingham.
