Biography
Richard is a Senior Associate in BCLP’s Re/Insurance Disputes team, sitting within the firm’s Financial Services Disputes and Investigations group. He has broad experience and regularly advises re/insurers in both the live and run-off markets on contentious re/insurance matters, as well as on broader contractual and commercial disputes. Richard’s experience extends to disputes settled by way of mediation, and those proceeding via arbitration and before the Commercial Court.
He has advised, and acted, on a range of matters including:
- Reinsurance coverage disputes arising from major losses such as COVID-19, the Russian invasion of Ukraine, 9/11, environmental liabilities and other catastrophes;
- Insurance Linked Security (ILS) disputes, including issues concerning the recoverability of trapped collateral;
- Alleged breaches of coverholder/binding authority agreements and claims against brokers;
- Complex insurance coverage disputes, including D&O, property, construction, EL/PL, professional indemnity, and specialty claims;
- Disputes arising out of legacy deals, the sale of Lloyd’s corporate members and associated accounting issues; and
- Reviewing and drafting insurance and reinsurance contract wordings.
Richard has undertaken secondments to the Claims Legal team of a leading legacy re/insurer, as well as an investment management firm focused on the insurance industry, handling a variety of claims and wordings matters. Prior to joining BCLP as a trainee in 2016, Richard also spent two years assessing complaints about insurance products brought against financial institutions by individuals and micro-enterprises.
