Overview

Our highly recommended and Tier 1 ranked licensing practice undertake a variety of licensing work including obtaining licences to permit alcohol sales and entertainment. In addition, they also deal with a variety of associated or other licensing work such as obtaining highways permits for events or tables and chairs and for specific types of venue including clubs aimed at the adult market. They also obtain licenses in relation to gambling activities (see our betting and gaming practice). The teams clients include several high profile national chains and large multi-national leisure operators as well as landlords, developers and financial institutions. We have been involved in and continue to act in relation to a number of very high profile developments, both within London and beyond, where specialist experience and a good knowledge of the issues is required.

Occupying the top spot in the legal directories for several years, our team advises clients on new legislation and remains at the forefront of legal developments. We work closely with our real estate and corporate colleagues and advise property owners, developers and investors on the licensing implications of business investments, lending and development. In relation to due diligence work we have advised lenders, purchasers and vendors on the licensing aspects involved with refinancing and M&A work.

We are recognised for our knowledge and skills in obtaining Late Licences, especially within the London area. We have also been actively involved in challenging the policies of councils by Judicial Review in the High Court on a number of occasions. In addition, we have been involved with some of the highest profile developments in London. One of our strengths lies in the advocacy capabilities of the team who represent clients before licensing tribunals around the country at all levels, including the Crown Court.   • TGI Fridays obtaining new licences around the country including within stress areas in Westminster and challenging onerous minimum pricing conditions in Newcastle. We also deal with all day to day licensing issues including personal licences. 
  • Here East successfully obtaining a number of new licences for both retailers and the event space within the development itself. Here East is part of the London 2012 legacy development.
  • Starbucks on their proposed new alcohol offering and dealing with their first UK licence application.
  • British Film Institute dealing with licence applications and providing advice in relation to the BFIs high profile IMAX and Southbank sites.
  • Sipsmith in obtaining a premises licence for the client’s Chiswick distillery in the face of local resident objections.
  • NOVA development obtaining 13 premises licences for a range of restaurant and bar operator tenants within the development on behalf of the landlord so the licences were in place prior to the development being completed.
  • The Globe Theatre acting on behalf of this high profile London theatre.
  • WeWork obtaining licences for WeWork’s shared office premises so that alcohol may be provided as part of its offer.
