Doug Mishkin, a partner in BCLP’s Technology, Commercial and Data practice, recently spoke with Gambling Insider regarding pending New York legislation that would require mobile sportsbook operators to prohibit wagers placed from college campuses.

In the article, Doug says the bill may not ultimately solve the problem it’s intended to address.

“It was not uncommon for there to be a lot of wagering activity right across the border when there were states that hadn’t yet legalized but their neighboring states had,” Mishkin said. “And so people who are interested in placing bets will still do so,” Doug told Gambling Insider.

“[And t]he nature of sports betting is such that there’s the placement of the wager itself, but oftentimes the real distraction isn’t so much from the placement of the wager, it’s from the watching of the match, the event unfolding that you wagered on."

Doug advises clients on complex commercial transactions in the gambling industry, compliance with U.S. gaming and daily fantasy sports laws, and corresponding legislative developments, and trains in-house legal and compliance teams on sports betting matters, including developing, drafting and enforcing corporate gambling policies.
