A pro bono team of attorneys from BCLP’s New York office obtained asylum for our client, who fled Honduras in 2013 because he feared death after being kidnapped, beaten, and threatened for his support of the LIBRE party, formed in opposition to a 2009 coup by the Honduran military. As a LIBRE activist, our client actively opposed the National Party, which was in power for 12 years after the coup. BCLP established at trial that the Honduran military and police work as the National Party’s enforcers, targeting and oppressing those who oppose them, particularly LIBRE party activists like our client. Although the National Party lost the presidency and a LIBRE member became president in 2021, BCLP demonstrated through expert testimony that our client’s fear of persecution if he returned to Honduras remains well-founded despite the change in government because the institutions of the narco-dictatorship that took hold during National Party rule remain in place.

The firm’s trial team included Partner Jon Ginsberg, Associate Liz Goldberg, and Counsel Glenn Coleman.
