Biography
Justin Winerman represents clients around the world in all aspects of complex corporate restructurings both in and out of court and across a wide range of industries, including health care, financial services, energy and media. He also advises on various insurance and reinsurance receivership and restructuring transactions.
Additionally, Mr. Winerman advises creditors, lenders, equity sponsors, and other parties in interest on business reorganization, special situations and insolvency matters. Mr. Winerman has distinguished himself in cross-border matters, serving as lead counsel in a number of chapter 15 cases, obtaining recognition and enforcement of proceedings in multiple jurisdictions around the globe. Mr. Winerman has advised clients on a number of cutting edge cross-border matters.
Mr. Winerman has repeatedly been named to The Best Lawyers in America for his work in bankruptcy, insolvency and reorganization law.

Mr. Winerman received the 2023 Outstanding Pro Bono Works Volunteer Award from the Chicago Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights in recognition of his transactional pro bono worked that helped first-time homebuyers, small business owners and non profits with various corporate needs.

Experience
Mr. Winerman has assisted on numerous Chapter 11 cases, including for:
- A nationwide mobile diagnostics health care provider, in its successful reorganization in Chapter 11 proceedings in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York, which delevered the company’s balance sheet by approximately $600 million. This matter was named a 2020 “TMA Turnaround of the Year” by the Turnaround Management Association and “Healthcare/Life Sciences Deal of the Year” ($500MM or more) by The M&A Advisor;
- An international subsea construction company, in its successful restructuring in Chapter 11 cases in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Texas. This matter received an Atlas Award for “Cross Border Turnaround of the Year”;
- A renewable energy project developer, in the largest Chapter 11 bankruptcy case by assets in 2016 and successful emergence from bankruptcy;
- A global transportation and industrial battery manufacturer, in its successful reorganization of more than $600 million of debt;
- A national gas storage firm;
- A menswear company;
- Multiple bank holding companies; and
- An ethanol producer
Mr. Winerman has also obtained recognition and enforcement in chapter 15 cases, including for companies in Bermuda and the Cayman Islands.
